We're welcoming the "pinnacle" of World Rugby to a new home in 2016!
February 25th, 2015
The team at BC Place is excited to announce that just 9-months after hosting the FIFA Woman's World Cup Final we will be welcoming another prestigious international sporting event, the World Rugby Sevens Series, into Canada's premier stadium!
Beginning in March of 2016, the two-day Rugby Sevens tournament and festival will bring 16 of the world's top teams to Vancouver, including South Africa and New Zealand, which currently sit top two in the series standings.
For those that might not be familiar with the sport, rugby sevens is a fast-paced and shorter version of traditional rugby with only seven players aside. The game has built a significant international audience through the success of the World Rugby Sevens Series. with over 75,000 guests attending the most recent series in Las Vegas. Rugby sevens has recently been recognized as an Olympic sport, and will be part of the program at the 2016 Olympic Games. If Canada's team can keep improving as they have recently, there's a chance they could medal in Rio!
One of the requirements of the Canadian bid for the World Rugby Sevens Series was the installation of a new turf surface for BC Place. This is a huge win for British Columbia as both the Canadian Soccer Association and Rugby Canada will be assisting with the funding for the new surface, an expense we had budgeted in full for when the turf had tentatively been scheduled to be replaced., likely in the fall of 2016. Offsetting costs on this project will be a significant win for BC Place!

Tickets to this world-class event have not yet been released but are sure to sell quickly!
